Philosophy of Teaching for All 

The Alexander Technique teaches all people how to better understand the functioning of your whole being. It is for anyone seeking greater embodied freedom, ease, enjoyment, presence and wellbeing in life. I work with people of all races, colors, religions, sexes, gender identities or expressions, sexual orientations, national origins, genetics, body types, abilities (visible and invisible), ages, and economic statuses. 

A note about F.M. Alexander: The writings of F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) contain historical accounts of his discoveries that led to his development of the technique. Those same writings include harmful statements, including disparaging remarks about people of color, stereotyped ideas of gender, and pseudoscientific socio-cultural evolutionary theories on race. I, alongside all contemporary teachers of the technique, denounce these ideas and the bigoted beliefs that they perpetuate. Those offensive and repellent ideas bear no relation or connection to the Alexander Technique I teach today.  

Additionally, I recognize that the Alexander Technique originates from white Eurocentric culture and acknowledge the lack of diversity, equity and inclusiveness inherent in that culture. I believe in increasing accountability for those habits and policies that perpetuate discrimination in our field. The conscious awareness the technique allows must be employed on a daily basis to promote equity, and reduce and repair harm.

The Alexander Technique is a process for positive change, both individual and social, and I strive to use it in a welcoming, affirming manner.  Feel free to dialogue with me about increasing access and changing habits that improve your experience of study.

I offer in person one-on-one sessions and limited small group classes for performers at my Union Square studio, and also see students online. Please contact me to request the type of lesson you’d like to find out availability and hear about my safety protocols.

Alexander sessions are a time for you to decompress, recharge and learn practical tools you can use on your own to support your well-being and enjoyment of life in whatever you do.

How does an online lesson work?

In our Zoom sessions, from the safety and comfort of your own space, you can:

  • alleviate stress and decompress from anxiety and worry

  • sustain healthy breathing and recuperate from respiratory illness

  • reduce chronic aches and pains

  • improve performance and develop skills for singers, actors, instrumentalists and other performing artists

  • experience greater ease and enjoyment in activities such as yoga and meditation practices, exercise and sports, housework, sitting at your desk, standing, walking and more

  • develop confidence and poise in presentations and professional environments

  • use your voice well with stamina and clarity

Lessons are available Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. No previous Alexander experience necessary, and no special equipment needed for virtual study.
